Large bodied mammals
Microfauna
Rusinga Island and Karungu are rich in microfauna such as rodents. These provide detailed information about the local habitats.
Molluscs
Terrestrial gastropods (snails) and freshwater bivalves are found on Rusinga Island, Mfangano Island, and Karungu. Shown on the left are fossil (>33,000 year old) and modern examples of the terrestrial gastropod Limicolaria cf. L. martensiana. Like microfauna, molluscs can be extremely informative for reconstructing ancient environments, and isotopic analyses of freshwater molluscs can also provide sensitive measures of past temperature or rainfall abundance.
